Crusader AA was a series of British air defence vehicles based on Crusader tank chassis. The Crusader AA used the now obsolete Crusader tank hull to provide armoured self-propelled anti-aircraft cover for armoured units.
Anti-Aircraft versions of the Crusader were developed in response to the threat posed by German "tank-busting" ground attack aircraft. The first design used a Bofors 40mm anti-aircraft gun on a Crusader III chassis, but this design was ultimately not adopted for this role.
The Crusader III A.A. Mk II was an improved design with an enclosed turret and twin 20mm Oerlikon cannons capable of firing explosive, incendiary or practice rounds at up to 450 rounds per minute. However the space for the crew was limited.
The Crusader III A.A. Mk III was the final version.
Mk III only differed from the Mk II by the position of the radio, which was moved to the hull in order to free some space inside the turret. Crusader AA II and III vehicles were used in front line duties with British and Polish armoured units after D-Day. Due to Allied air superiority they had had little opportunity to fire at their intended targets.
In Flames Of War -
British Armoured Squadron and Armoured Recce Squadrons can have their Company HQs supported by Crusader AA tanks for +40 points per tank.
As tanks they are Fully-tracked and have armoured of Front 2, Side 2 and Top 1. The tank is Fast, but Unreliable.
The Twin 20mm anti-aircraft gun has a range of 16"/40cm, ROF 5, AT 5 and FP 5+. |
