An ASL historical Module published by le Franc Tireur.
In 1942, the British Royal Navy was in dire straits. The German Kriegsmarine, using the French ports of the Atlantic coast, launched repeated attacks on the supply line through which the United States were keeping up Brittain's war effort. Yet, there was an even greater threat than the Uboats wrecking havoc in the Atlantic convoys : the Tirpitz. Twin sister of the giant battleship Bismark, sunk after an epic battle, the Tirpitz was a formidable opponent to any British warship. Yet its size in itself was a limitation : there were only two dry docks in which it could bed. One was in Norway. The other one, which could afford the Tirpitz direct access to the Atlantic, was the forme Joubert, designed pre-war for the Normandie ship, located in StNazaire, France. If the Tirpitz could be based in StNazaire, it would pose a formidable threat to England's life line... The estuary of the Loire River that led to St Nazaire, and the port itself were defended by one battalion of marine artillery and one battalion of Flak artillery, plus various support units. The Loire River was (and still is) crisscrossed by treacherous mudflats. An attack from the sea was impossible. Impossible was exactly the type of mission the British Commandos were made for.
On March 28, 1942, 611 British Commandos aboard the HMS Campbeltown (painted and disguised as a German destroyer) along with 18 motor gun boats sailed upstream the Loire River and caught the Germans off guard. The next morning, all but 27 Commandos were either killed or captured. In the meantime, however, they had rammed the Tirpitz dock with the explosive-laden Campbeltown, and destroyed dry docks, lock gates, pumps and other facilities with explosives, axes and sledgehammers, effectively putting the harbor out of order for the Tirpitz. Little more than 600 resolute men had foiled the entire Kriegsmarine war plan, stalled the Nazi onslaught over the Atlantic, and confined one of the largest and most powerful cruisers in the world to a tiny zone of operation. This raid, which earned the Commandos and Royal Navy Sailors 5 Victoria Crosses, is the Greatest Raid of All Times.
Operation Chariot - the St.Nazaire Raid is our go at putting this famous action into ASL. Designed by Andrew Hershey and friends, brought to you by the drunkards who already commit le Franc Tireur once a year, St Nazaire contains everything you need to play, except the half-ton of ASL material that you always need :
One countersheet, one historical map, a rules booklet and 15 scenarios. Through 8 scenarios, this pack depicts on a historical map of the St Nazaire harbor the Commando Raid of 1942.
