Working in the mines is dangerous work, and often times, there simply aren't enough doctors to ensure that every Contract Town has someone capable of treating wounds.
The Medical Automaton arose out of need. At first, it was seen as a bit of a marvel, as it was able to perform a number of complicated tasks just as well as a skilled doctor. As it tended to more patients, though, its flaws started to become more apparent.
Most predictably, the Automaton has nothing approaching a bedside manner. The machine was simply interested in compleating its job than on whether or not its "patient" actually wanted (or needed) the medical attention. One procedure would often cause the Automaton to believe another was necessary, and so on down the line until the patient finally succumbed to one of the many unnecessary procedures they had been given.
This peculiarity was enough to keep the Automaton from going into mass production, but they still see some use in more remote mining towns... often with a disclaimer that a third party be present to shut the machine down once the initial injury has been treated.
