Finnish Light Infantry Platoon and Kapteeni Lauri Törni
The Jääkäri were Finland's elite light infantry. The Jääkäri troops were initially Finnish volunteers served with the Germans, training as Jägers (elite light infantry), during World War One as the Royal Prussian 27th Jäger Battalion. They fought on the northern flank of the eastern front from 1916.
At the outbreak of the Civil War in Finland Jägers were released from German service and 2,000 volunteers were soon fighting to put down the communists.
Their contribution to the White victory and Finnish independence was critical. They provided crucial leadership and training to the mostly green troops of the Civil War.
The Jääkäri continued their role as elite light infantry during the Winter and Continuation Wars.
The Jääkäri (yay-kah-ree, or hunters) scout ahead and provide flank security.
Many Finnish soldiers are hunters and woodsmen, familiar with the country and completely at home in it. Their ability to advance silently and undetected is remarkable. They are aggressively led and their role is as much assault as reconnaissance.
