Though his father, who was chief of the Ngati-Toa tribe, was killed when Te Raupraha was young, it was through his own prowess that Te Raupraha became the chief of his people. His aggressive leadership attracted a band of followers, and he led a series of incursions into the territories of other tribes. After narrowly escaping death at the hands of his enemies, Te Raupraha composed a haka, which is still used today, in celebration of his triumph of life over death. His skill in battle was amply demonstrated against the British, who came to fear him above all others. Te Raupraha led his people through years of warfare as a brilliant strategist and leader.
