1813 : the situation is bad for the French Empire. A new army has been created for the German theater, a new campaign starts there. In Spain, it is time to withdraw. The French armies fall back, stricken by the powerful Allied army, 80,000 British, Spaniards and Portuguese, driven by the Iron Duke, Wellington.
Close to Vitoria, the worst conditions are met: 60,000 French under Jourdan and Joseph, outnumbered and with low morale, are poorly positioned and lead, diminished by multiple detachments, and encumbered by thousands of wagons and the army treasure.
A terrible defeat will follow, a logical conclusion to this cursed war, opening France to a further invasion. Joseph and Jourdan will be replaced by Soult, who will strive to improve this dramatic situation.
However, the battle had been a furious fight, several positions were taken and re-taken many times. Wellington's army, split in four distinct columns, could have been not only delayed, but also possibly beaten.
Vitoria is a huge battle, a real challenge for both players. This time the French is not the "attacker in columns" and the British is not the "defender in line". Both maps are set side by side at their small edge. Wellington enters by the western edge of the western map and sometimes exits the battlefield by the eastern edge of the eastern map, rolling up the poor French army.
Of course, you can do better than that! All you need is provided: alternate deployments, presence of the North Army, and of several divisions that could, and should have been present that sad day.
The game includes two maps, two countersheets with a new graphic standard, and the robust version 3 of the rules.
