Now, Seattle-based manufacturer Screenlife, LLC has created the ultimate James Bond trivia game. SCENE IT? The James Bond Edition is a game that combines trivia and DVD technology. The game comes with its own game board, 200 trivia cards, 30 "Q" cards, 6 reference cards, 1 six-sided die, 1 eight-sided die, 4 collectible metal tokens of James Bond, Honey Ryder, the Aston Martin DB5, martini glass and a DVD containing scenes and images from all 20 Bond films.
The DVD is filled to the max with movie clips both with easy and very difficult questions. Photos where famous character's faces are erased except for their clothing. Audio soundbites of villains or allies, foreign titles or coded messages, missing letters and my personal favorite - a surveillance camera where a scene is zoomed in tight, panning over the shot while slowly revealing the photo. All which have countdowns of 30 seconds or less.
I had the pleasure of playing an advanced copy of this game and I must say it is a great deal of fun. There are two ways of playing SCENE IT?, the conventional way by using the game board and DVD. Or the "party version" where only the DVD will play on it's own, revealing questions and answers to you and your friends. Both formats will cause some to be very competitive while others may feel they don't have a chance against Bond brainiacs. Be sensitive and try to recognize this when you're playing with non-Bond fans, they just might want to play with you again. Having said that, the game is highly entertaining for everyone.
And for those of us who know their OO7 history and can recite every line from the films, this game is definitely for you. But beware, if you think you know everything about James Bond, think again. The makers have tossed in questions that relate to other films outside the legendary series and there are some questions and puzzles which could trip you up.
The DVD is superbly produced with an original credit sequence that could rival anything Maurice Binder ever created. It has colorful graphics, puzzles, and it comes with its own tutorial narrated by "Q" himself, John Cleese. One can honestly see the long hours that went into creating this game. However, with most trivia games one will notice a blooper or two in the production elements. The one I spotted was a slow revealing puzzle showing Japanese actress Mie Hama as heroine Kissy Suzuki from the film You Only Live Twice. The makers had her listed as a villain. Oh, well we can't all be geniuses.
The founders, Dave Long and Craig Kinzer, have created the perfect trivia game since Trivia Pursuit hit the market in the 80s. Their company has produced several more SCENE IT? games such as the TV Edition, Turner Classic Movies Edition and the Disney Edition. I personally would love to see them produce a Universal Monster Edition as well. |
