On June 25, 1950, the North Korean Army invaded South Korea. The United Nations' counterattack began on September 17th when the X Corps landed at Inchon. By late November, the Communist forces were pushed north almost all the way to China. The American forces were promised they would be home for Christmas.
On November 27, 1950, 100,000 Chinese infantry lunched an offensive against 28,500 American Marine and Army troops in the sub-zero cold of the Koto-Ri Plateau. In 10 days half the Americans were dead, wounded, or frost-bitten - 37,500 Chinese soldiers shared similar fates - and a new name for valor under impossible conditions had been carved in the Annals of Warfare:
This Battalion - Platoon level simulation covers one of the epic battles of all time. The soldiers of the X Corps had shattered the North Korean forces they had battled from Inchon on the west coast of Korea to Wonsan on the northeast coast in a series of movments that effectively cut two of the three main supply routes from China into Korea. Now, they had turned northwest onto the Koto-ri Plateau toward the major inland crossing point of the Yalu River from China. Enemy resistance faded before the advance.
In the freezing cold night of November 27th, that changed as the Marines on the west shore of the Chosin Reservoir and the Army troops on the eastern side were hit by simultaneous attacks of five divisions of the Communist Chinese People's Army.
Forming, holding, and reforming as best possible, each of the separated American forces had two operational objectives: to create a defense in place while preparing to make a fighting withdrawal to the air field at Hagaru-Ri. The weather was as fierce an enemy as the opposing soldiers.
Led by skillful, determined, veteran officers, the Chinese forces used their advantage in numbers and their ability to move quickly through the long nights to close on the beleaguered American positions and mount punishing hand-to-hand assaults before fading into the snow-covered hills with the coming of sunrise and and arrival of air and artillery support for their foes.
CHOSIN presents a dynamic situation to each player. The United Nations forces must move from strong defensive position to strong defensive position, digging in at night, making the most of mutually-supporting fire positions, while working to keep ammunition moving forward and wounded moving the rear.
The Chinese player must balance the deployment of his five divisions to hit the enemy forces scattered on both sides of the nearly-impassible frozen reservoir at the same time as pressure is put on the supply hub around the Hagaru-Ri air field. Night attacks, if successful, can shatter dug-in infantry defending vulnerable artillery batteries.
