Eagle Games make a number of wargames, mostly based on historical periods. These games contain 1/72 scale plastic figures, and this set consists of those figures without the rest of the game.
Since the pieces in this set were originally meant to be game pieces, it would be wrong to compare them with the dedicated sets found elsewhere on this site. This set has only four poses, which represent, from left to right, infantry, flag-bearer, mounted officer and cavalry. For the intended purpose this is quite adequate.
The standard of sculpting on the figures is not up to the standard of those from Italeri, Airfix and the rest. By comparison they are fairly crude, with little detail, and they are also very flat. The mounted officer has no face at all, and the standing rifleman has his right elbow high in the air, a position which would be very uncomfortable, completely pointless and verging on the impossible. The flag-bearer carries a good sized colour on a remarkably short staff, and he is unusual in that he wears boots like a cavalryman. In a number of other minor respects the uniform and equipment are not authentic, and yet these figures achieve what they set out to achieve - they represent their units on the game board, and they do have the flavour of Civil War troops.
The one horse pose is OK, though it is strange to note that although 30 mounted men have been provided, they only have 24 horses on which to ride. The cannon is more of a generic piece of ordnance than a highly accurate model, being greatly simplified in order to mould it in one piece apart from the wheels.
This set comes in two colour combinations. One set has all the human poses split equally between dark blue and grey plastic, with the horses in brown (the scanned examples are from this set). The other set delivers the men split equally between mid-blue and butternut, with the horses being black.
Though these are not the finest American Civil War troops made in this scale, they do allow wargamers to produce large numbers of identical looking units more easily than by using conventional sets.
