Easy to learn, a lifetime to master, Cirondo was the brainchild of Angus Wright, a keen games player, who came up with the idea in 1989. He created a strategically challenging game with the depth of chess but the simplicity of draughts or chequers, with endless playing variations and dynamic gameplay forcing players to look 3 or 4 moves ahead. The name for Cirondo came from "CIR" for circle and "RONDO" meaning a continuous piece of music
In 1991 Angus produced five hundred black and white retro versions of the game (now collector’s items) with plastic pieces and a chic board 32 squares round and 8 squares deep. But Cirondo was ahead of its time and Angus shelved plans to mass-produce the game.
In 2001 with the Internet changing the shape and speed of gameplay, Angus revisited the Cirondo project with his brother Andi and his wife Rebecca. Together they designed an interactive website with a powerful demo version of Cirondo adding new features including a 4-player version of the game. In 2002 they launched the first full online version of the game to critical acclaim from the gaming world.
Now the wheel has come full circle. Due to strong demand, the company is preparing to launch the game in traditional board game format at the end of 2004. Gone are original plastic pieces and the 1980s packaging, replaced by quality, modern metallic pieces and a sleek and appealing game design. But 15 years on Cirondo still remains outwardly simplistic, yet fiendishly challenging, in a unique homage to the vision of its original creator, Angus Wright.
