Beyond Mere Mortals is a superhero game that seems to suffer from the limitations of the publisher. Like a great Indy film of little budget and circulation, this game seems to have that million-dollar concept put forth on shoestring financing. The result is a diamond in the ruff.
The mechanics of the game are sound as a pound. The chapters are easy to follow, making character generation easy, fun and flexible. There are four basic races you can play: Human, Mutant, Alien and Artificial Life. Each race of course has its own unique benefits and drawbacks governing power points, starting money and racial traits. As with most d20 games, after you choose your race, you then select your class. In Beyond Mere Mortals, those classes include the Acrobat, the Brain, the Hunter, the Roboteer and more. Each class has their own set of skills, bonus feats and class features. Many of the feats and class features are specific to Beyond Mere Mortals, and not found in other d20 games. |
