The Soviets were great believers in the benefits of direct support from their anti-tank and artillery weapons, but despite this when the occasion called for indirect fire they could be devastating.
Relying on their large batteries to pound the enemy into submission they were the kings of the pre-plotted preparatory bombardment, often concentrating ridiculous amounts of guns on enemy positions before launching attacks. It reminded many German Veterans of the First World War of the Western Front.
Planning, coordination, and timing were the key to Soviet doctrine. Detailed plans were laid out in advance to neutralize probable threats. They used surprise concentrations, false transfers, and rolling barrages, but often only to a strict and inflexible fire plan. Defensively pre-plotted lines are calculated so that a barrage can be set up quickly when enemy forces move to that range. |
